Weight Loss Myths- 2007!
Perhaps the reason there are so many weight loss myths is the fact so many people are seeking an easy way to lose weight without having to count calories and exercise. For some reason, people refuse to accept the fact that the only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. Here are five of the most common myths surrounding weight loss.
Myth # 1: Grapefruits Burn Fat
Some people mistakenly believe that consuming grapefruit and other acidic foods actually fires up the body’s metabolism and causes it to burn fat. The fact of the matter is that no food causes your body to burn fat, and no food causes weight loss.
While grapefruits are a healthy food that can be a part of an overall healthy diet, do not eat them thinking that you are going to lose weight because of them. Eat them because they are a healthy and nutritious food.
Myth #2: Carbohydrates Make You Gain Weight
Many people do lose weight when following carbohydrate controlled diets. However, the reason for success with such diets has to do with a reduction in the number of calories consumed. Carbohydrates themselves do not cause weight gain. If you eat too much of any food, carbohydrate or not, you will gain weight.
Myth #3: Low-Fat Foods are Low Calorie
Just because a food is low if fat does not mean that it should be included in a weight loss plan. Many low-fat foods have even more calories than the full fat versions. When processed foods are reformulated for fat reduction, manufacturers have to replace the fat with something else such as more sugar, flour, or other fillers that add even more calories.
You don’t need to eliminate fat from your diet. Fat is an important part of a balanced diet, and it helps you eat less by making you feel full. Don’t assume that low fat foods are necessary diet-friendly.
Myth #4: Fad Diets Lead to Long Term Weight Loss
Fad diets have been known to help people lose weight, but they are generally not successful for long term weight loss. Most fad diets are very structured and restrictive. While you might initially lose weight with the help of a fad diet, you will probably gain it back as soon as you stop following the diet.
Myth #5: If A Diet Supplement is All-Natural, it is Safe
All-natural and safe are not the same thing. Think about the recent controversy about that dangers of ephedra that let to this all-natural product being banned from sale in America. Ephedra has been linked to a number of serious health problems, and is believed to have caused death in some cases.
Before you assume an all-natural product is safe, check out all of the ingredients and verify that there are no serious side effects associated with the product. Keep in mind that the United States government does not require all-natural products to include information about side effects on product packaging.
Don’t make the mistake of sabotaging your diet by falling for one of these weight loss myths.
